Tape finishing is one of the final machining process in the superfinishing of surfaces. In ideal fashion, surfaces which have been "finished" in this way meet significantly elevated requirements in terms of greater precision and deliver the desired surface topography exactly in accordance with the requirements.
A brief detour into the relatively young science of tribology highlights quite how important innovative strategies are in the production of the required surfaces. According to the Society for Tribology, "industrial nations incur annual losses in the region of 5% of their gross domestic product due to friction and wear; for Germany, this equates to around EUR 35 billion per year. By implementing the knowledge we have already gained in the field of tribology, some EUR 5 billion worth of losses could be saved every year. With the aid of further tribological research, these potential savings could be increased further still."
